The BMW M5 is set to receive a significant update, adopting the automaker’s Neue Klasse design language. Camouflaged prototypes spotted at the Nürburgring reveal a more angular, slit-like headlight design and a prominent kidney grille shape, marking a departure from the current model’s controversial styling. These prototypes, also spied at the Nürburgring, confirm the M5 will adopt the eye mask design seen on the new 3 Series and electric i3, though with a more pronounced kidney grille compared to the 3 Series’ non-functional design.
The front end adopts a shark-like appearance, featuring a more defined snout and a detailed, technical bumper. Instead of the 3 Series’ front end that has no real kidneys, the 5 Series’ headlights will connect to a more prominent kidney shape, though there’s no cooling vents needed in them, with a small slit below instead. While the sides and rear will see updates, including new side skirts, wheel designs, and taillight graphics, these changes are less dramatic compared to the front, which will feature a toothier and more technical bumper, giving the M5 a more agreeable face than the current model.
This redesign aligns with a broader trend in BMW’s lineup, following the successful implementation of the Neue Klasse language in the 7 Series, which has been widely praised for its adaptation to this new design philosophy. The M5’s update is expected to introduce not only visual changes but also technological improvements and potential powertrain upgrades, particularly for electrified models like the plug-in-hybrid M5 and fully electric i5, addressing the growing demand for more sustainable performance vehicles.
The interior will undergo a complete transformation, consistent with the design seen in other Neue Klasse vehicles, as evidenced by earlier spy shots. Despite the camouflage, the prototype indicates a return to a more traditional BMW grille design, moving away from the current model’s less-defined kidney shape, and aligning with the more snout-y, classic BMW aesthetic.
The updated 5 Series is anticipated to debut in 2027, with the M5 likely following closely or being unveiled at the same time. This refresh aims to address the mixed reception of the current design while integrating the latest advancements in automotive technology and performance, ensuring the M5 remains a benchmark in its segment.
