Lucid Motors says its upcoming midsize electric SUV, the Lucid Cosmos, will exceed 400 miles of range on a single charge, positioning it ahead of current competitors such as the Tesla Model Y and Rivian R2.
CEO confirms range target during interview
During a recent appearance on the outlet’s “Quest Means Business,” CEO Silvio Napoli answered questions about the Cosmos’ expected driving distance. He stated, “On a charge, we are 400 miles plus,” indicating an ambition well above the 357‑mile EPA rating of the Model Y Premium rear‑wheel‑drive version and the 330‑mile rating of the Rivian R2 Performance.
A Lucid spokesperson told InsideEVs that the vehicle remains in prototype stage, so the numbers are provisional. Official WLTP and EPA estimates will be released closer to the launch, slated for early next year.
How the Cosmos could achieve its range claim
Engineers showcased the midsize platform at Lucid’s Investor Day, noting that a 69 kWh battery pack could already deliver more than 300 miles. By comparison, many current electric SUVs rely on larger packs; the Hyundai Ioniq 5 uses an 84 kWh pack to reach up to 318 miles.
Lucid targets an efficiency of 4.5 miles per kilowatt‑hour for the Cosmos. At that rate, a pack near 90 kWh would be needed to surpass the 400‑mile mark, though the exact size will depend on testing methods, usable versus gross capacity, software limits, and wheel choices.
Additional design choices aim to stretch the range further. The Cosmos is engineered with a low drag coefficient of 0.22, and its platform incorporates efficiency gains over the Air and Gravity models. The vehicle will also use the next‑generation Atlas drive unit, which is said to have fewer parts and be lighter than the Zeus motors in the Gravity, while delivering more power density and higher efficiency than the drive units in the Model Y.

For many buyers, the promised range could make the Cosmos a compelling alternative to premium offerings like the BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60, both of which sit near the 400‑mile threshold. Lucid’s own Air sedan already exceeds 400 miles in most trims, with the Grand Touring variant achieving a record 512 miles of EPA‑rated range.
From a practical standpoint, a vehicle that consistently hits the 400‑mile mark would reduce the need for frequent charging on long trips, easing range anxiety for drivers who travel regularly between cities. It could also broaden the appeal of electric SUVs to consumers who have previously favored gasoline‑powered crossovers for their established range capabilities.
Financial backdrop and launch timeline
Lucid’s second‑quarter earnings revealed a loss exceeding $1 billion, prompting a turnaround plan that includes delaying the Cosmos launch to early next year. Napoli emphasized that the company will not rush the vehicle to market, insisting that every process and quality target must be met before production begins.
While the exact EPA and WLTP numbers remain to be announced, the combination of a high‑efficiency drivetrain, aerodynamic design, and a sizable pack suggests that the Cosmos could realistically achieve the 400‑plus‑mile range claimed by its CEO. Whether the final specifications live up to the early statements will become clearer as the launch approaches.
