Mercedes has given its midsize GLE SUV a facelift for the 2027 model year, resulting in several updated versions, including the Mercedes-AMG GLE53 plug-in hybrid. The GLE53 gains a new PHEV powertrain, which combines an AMG-enhanced version of the M256M Evo turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with a 181-horsepower electric motor and a 25.3-kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery.

This powertrain produces a total combined system output of 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, making it a significant upgrade over the previous model. The new GLE53 is available in both SUV and slant-back coupe bodystyles, with prices starting at $98,400 for the former and $99,450 for the latter, including destination.

Performance and Efficiency

The GLE53 PHEV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds, which is 0.8 seconds quicker than the previous model, despite weighing 827 pounds more. The SUV’s weight totals 6,107 pounds, while the GLE53 Coupe is 44 pounds lighter at 6,063 pounds. In terms of efficiency, the GLE53 has an EPA-estimated all-electric range of 45 miles on a charge, and it can drive as fast as 87 mph in all-electric mode.

A test drive of the GLE53 Coupe through Colorado’s mountain roads resulted in an average fuel economy of 30 mpg, which is expected to improve upon the outgoing GLE53’s 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. The GLE53 also features a 60-kW DC fast-charging function that enables the battery to be charged from 10% to 80% in around 20 minutes via a CCS charge port.

The GLE53’s powertrain is seamless and refined, with the electric motor providing a significant boost to the engine’s performance. The car’s drive modes, including Electric, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, allow for a range of driving experiences, from efficient to aggressive. In Comfort mode, the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension provides a plush ride, while in Sport or Sport+ modes, the suspension firms up and the engine becomes more responsive.

One of the key benefits of the GLE53’s PHEV powertrain is its ability to offer a compromise between efficiency and performance. The car can drive in all-electric mode for dozens of miles, making it suitable for daily commutes or running errands, while also providing the performance and agility of a traditional gasoline-powered car when needed. This makes it an attractive option for those who want a car that can handle both everyday driving and more spirited driving experiences.

However, the added weight of the PHEV battery is palpable through tighter turns, which may detract from the driving experience for some enthusiasts. Nevertheless, the GLE53 remains a capable and enjoyable car to drive, with its powerful engine and responsive transmission making it well-suited to a variety of driving scenarios.

The GLE53’s exterior design features a more aggressive look, with updated front and rear bumpers, as well as new wheel designs. The car’s interior also features updated materials and designs, including the new Superscreen display. However, some of the same issues that plague other GLE models are still present, such as the lack of convenient front-cabin interior storage and vinyl sun visors.

Conclusion and Availability

The GLE53 is expected to be a popular choice among buyers who want a car that can offer a balance of efficiency, performance, and aggression, without going all-in on the more extreme GLE63 model.
